8 fried food finalists vie for Big Tex crown

Fair goers wanting beer-filled pretzel pockets, deep-fried frozen margaritas must have ID

DALLAS — Fried food fans looking to feast at this year's State Fair of Texas will have to bring an ID along with their appetite.

Fair officials unveiled eight finalists in the Big Tex Choice Awards, including alcohol-laced fried goodies, Wednesday. Vendors at the fair that runs Sept. 24 through Oct. 17 are seeking honors for best taste and most creative new offerings.

Fair spokeswoman Sue Gooding says those hoping to try the beer-filled pretzel pockets and deep-fried frozen margaritas will have to prove they are at least 21.

The other six finalists to be judged by members of the media Sept. 6 include a deep fried s'mores Pop-Tart, fried club salad, fried chocolate, fried lemonade, fried caviar that features black-eyed peas, and a fried Frito pie, with chili and corn chips.

And in other news, KFC's Double Down and Krispy Kreme Burger are scheduled to make an appearance at the State Fair in Texas. The two giants are claiming they want to show everyone how to truly make Americans grow...in size. News at 11.

Oh my! Fried Frito Pie! I may have to hit the Fair this year. I hate fairs. And parking at the Texas State Fair is one of the freakiest endeavors ever. The only thing worse in Dallas is Oak Cliff (where the convenience store clerks are likely to rob you).

Yeah, the cancelled the Michigan State Fair due to lack of funding. It looks like they haven't even mowed the lawn at the Fairgrounds all summer.
