| Piranha 1978 Starring Bradford Dillman,Heather Menzies,Kevin McCarthy,Dick Miller,Barbara Steele,and Shannon Collins Rated R
With the release of this cult classic on blu-ray and regular dvd this week, and an upcoming remake later this month,I thought I would do a classic review of this movie, which by the way is part of the Roger Corman Cult Classsic collection. The premise of this film is about a investigator name Maggie McKeown(Menzies)who is hired to find two missing teenagers who decide to take a night time swim in a military research pool, and end up becoming fish food,so to speak. While looking for the missing teens,Maggie meets Paul Grogan, the local drunk, who helps Maggie find the military complex. While both look around to find the missing teens, they discover a lab full of all sorts of creatures and come to the conclusion to drain the pool to see if the teenagers bodies maybe in there. When they hit the drain switch, they are confronted by Dr.Robert Hoak (McCarthy)who tries to stop them to no avail. After a short fight, and the doctor ending up in a bad way,the three go down river on a homemade raft to try and warn the town of the impending danger off geneticly engineered piranha. While going down the river,Dr.Hoak tells Maggie and Paul the reasons for the piranhas and gives them a clue on how to stop the killers from getting out of control.I found this film to be quite entertaining even if it had that cheesey feeling that you get with most 70's films and the make-up was great when you see the people being pulled out of the water after getting attacked. I also felt the underwater special effects were top-notch and filming was superb. One thing I didn't relize till i read the case was the case and crew went from this movie also appeared in some of the worlds greatest movies like Invasion Of The Body Snatchers,Black Sunday, and A Bucket Of Blood.I loved this movie as a kid and watching it again after all these years, I still love it.This movie was so popluar back in the day it had a sequel made in 1981 called Piranha II:The Spawning, which was James Cameron's feature film directorial debut. If you are looking to relive your childhood with some cheesey, yet entertaining movie, then this should help.

| just wanted to add that even thought blu-ray gives a better picture to movies nowadays it still had that funky 70's picture quailty to it which i really didn't mind,it just made me feel like a kid again watching for the very first time.and i also looked into the movie a little more and in the 90's they actaully did a remake of the film with William Katt of The Greatest American Hero and Mila Kunis | |
